A colour course for painters, printmakers, graphic designers, architects and anyone interested in colour in a professional or personal capacity.
This is essentially a practical course though we’ll also be looking at examples of work that illustrate the use of colour in art and design; both in an historical and contemporary context.
Course aims: through a series of practical exercises we will explore distinct aspects of the grammar of colour. This step-by-step approach will increase your understanding and enjoyment of colour by introducing to you the underlying principles of colour harmony and colour behaviour.
The emphasis on the course is experiential in its approach to colour. Seeing, understanding and appreciating colour for yourself rather than approaching colour through any particular theory.
The ‘step-by-step’ programme is a ‘slow food’ practical series of distinct exercises that are designed to build confidence in your appreciation of colour. For example i. a close look at the spectrum as it is represented in the convention of the colour circle. ii. Hue analysis in a session that demands concentrated observation of fine differences of hue. iii. Simultaneous contrast; perhaps the origin of colour theory in the 19C. iv. Chromatic greys and the exploration of desaturated colours. v. Partitive colour (retinal mixtures); a look at divisionism, pointillism. vi. Monochromatic scales; an exercise in distinguishing between comparative tonal values of a range of colours.
There is a great deal of enjoyment to be derived from these exercises; the deep satisfaction of ordering a bewildering stream of different colour sensations into coherent areas of knowledge. Knowledge is power they say. Perhaps; certainly knowledge is liberating. A more informed understanding of colour will invariably add to your appreciation and application of colour both in the realm of work and of play.
